Automatic design of side-core is an important step in die
and mold CAD and design automation. In design of side-cores,
the first thing is to identify and recognize undercut features,
which cannot be molded by the core and cavity blocks. After the
undercut features are identified, the undercut feature surfaces are then extracted. To decide the demolding direction, the Demap
of undercut feature is determined and the side-core is then
designed. In this paper, the surface visibility, moldability and
demoldability are presented and used to classify the surfaces
of molded/formed products into core-, cavity- and side-coremolded
surface categories. The approach and procedure to
further classifying the side-core molded surfaces into different
undercut features is proposed. The demoldability map of
undercut features and the most preferred demolding direction
are then defined to help side-core design. Furthermore, the
detailed procedure and processes for side-core generation are
explained and presented through a case study. The developed
technology is efficient in design of side-cores.
