英语中，一般形容词放在名词的前面，修饰名词做定语，这种前置的定语叫前置定语。如a beautiful girl（漂亮的女孩），beautiful就是前置定语。后置定语是指修饰词放在名词的后面。如 the girl who is very beautiful （那个非常漂亮的女孩）， 修饰词beautiful放在了被修饰词 girl的后面，这就叫做后置定语。
一般后置定语分类有 ：
1定语从句 。 例如 the girl who is more beautiful is my sister (那个更漂亮的女孩是我的妹妹）。
2 动词ing做定语。如 the girl lying in the sofa is my sister(躺在沙发上的女孩是我的妹妹。）
3动词ed做定语。 如 the trees planted yesterday need watering.（昨天种的树需要浇水）。
4动词不定式 to do 做定语。 如 the question to be answered is very difficult.(要回答的问题非常难）。
5 介词短语做定语。 如 the girl under the tree is my sister.(在树下站的女孩是我的妹妹）。
6 修饰不定代词，定语后置。 不定代词如something，someone， anything， nothing等被修饰时，形容词后置。如 something interesting（有趣的事），interesting就放在了后面。
7特殊的形容词。 一些特殊的形容词如present，alive等修饰名词时,这些形容词一般放在名词的后面。如 the guests present are warmly welcomed.(到场的客人受到了热烈欢迎），present 就放在了guests 的后面。
