the reason why··· 是在定语从句中，reason为先行词。why是关系副词。后面加完整的句子，如：This is the reason why i came late. i came late.此句是完整的句子。
the reason that····也是定语从句中，reason为先行词，that是关系代词，代替先行词在从句中做成份（做名词能做的成份，如主语，宾语等），也就是说，that后面的句子一定的缺成份的。如：The reason that he told me is not reasonable. that he told me 这个从句中，told缺宾语，应该是tell sb. sth. 所以that在从句中做tell的宾语。
在做题时一定分析好从句的句子成份，是否缺成份是关键，缺成份选that，不缺选why
