You are welcomed to purchase real estate in Canada, however, such an investment will not give you any rights to reside in or obtain a visa to visit this country.
This also will not qualify you for any landed status. If you come to Canada on a visitor's visa, of course, you can live in your house. If your visa is rejected, you can't come here, so you can't live there.
In Toronto and Vancouver, a average house (assuming 200 sq m) can easily costs 350,000 to 500,000. An average apartment is from 200,000 to 300,000. There are too many properties of half to a million.
With that amount of money, you should consider investment immigration, if you can prove you earn your wealth by legal means and meet other qualifications such as management experience.
I may be wrong, but I don't think Hong Kong accepts investment immigration directly from Chinese in China.
Like Shanghai and Beijing, Hong Kong a world class city, but not necessarily everyone's cup of tea. I don't like Hong Kong, but Canada (hmmmm) is too quiet.
