武汉市位于中国腹地中心、湖北省东部、长江与汉水交汇处。在平面直角坐标上，东西最大横距134千米，南北最大纵距约155千米。武汉的最东边在新洲区徐古街将军山村、最西边在蔡甸区侏儒山街国光村、最南边在江夏区湖泗街均堡村、最北边在黄陂区蔡店街李冲村。
武汉市江河纵横，河港沟渠交织，湖泊库塘星布，滠水、府河、倒水、举水、金水、东荆河等从市区两侧汇入长江，形成以长江为干流的庞大水网，水资源丰富。水域总面积达2217.6平方千米，占全市土地面积的26.1%。市域内5千米以上的河流有165条。有湖泊166个，被称为“百湖之市”，其中，城区内有湖泊43个。汤逊湖是中国最大的城中湖（面积达47.6平方千米），面积33.9平方千米的东湖在中心城区退居第二。
