我不同意：
We have a lot in common.我们有很多相同之处
a lot of ,a lot 都是“很多的”意思后面加名词是对的
in common是副词，表示相同地，
我觉得词句从字面（语法）上翻译：
我们共同拥有很多的...，in common 作副词翻译动词have，a lot作have(拥有)的宾语（可以省略a lot 后面的词）
大家解释得不完全正确，没有从解释道根本之处，此句应该意译。

这里的A LOT 和后面的介词不是搭配在一起的，IN COMMON 是一个固定搭配，表示相同。

a lot of是”很多的。。。”，后面跟一样东西（名词）。
a lot就是“很多”
