语境决定词义的适用性。
词汇是句子语义表达的基本元素。除专用名词（人名、物名、地名和组织机构名称等）和专业术语外，所有词汇，包括语法结构性词汇，在词义理解上都受语境的制约与影响。离开了语境，词义的理解就没有合适的依据。比如，table 单独出现时，其词义可以是词典释义的任何一条：桌子、表格、制作表格......。但出现在下列句子中，词义就限定在具体的语境所需要的语义表达中了：
We are all sitting quietly around the dinner table.（餐桌）
