定语从句中，关系代词省略是怎么回事？

1.Can you lend me the book (you talked about)the other day?
这个可以省略。
2.He gave Tom the kite which/that he like best.
为什么这个which/that 不可省略

这句是动宾短语后的定语从句，一般只有动宾短语后可以省略关系代词。其他时候（在定语从句中）是不省略的，如第二句先行词是the kite，没有动宾短语结构。

which，that既可作主语又可作宾语（作宾语可以省略），可以指人也可以指物。
在从句中所起作用如下：
1.He is the man whom/ that I saw yesterday. 他就是我昨天见的那个人。（whom/that在从句中作宾语）
2.The package (which / that) you are carrying is about to come unwrapped. 你拿那个包裹快要散开了。(which / that在句中作宾语）
