今天，我演讲用的语言不是我的母语，但在我的心中，这种语言已经成为了我的第二母语。她为我打开一扇体验新世界的门，一扇观察新世界的窗。她让我可以挣大我的双眼，从一个全新的角度来看待这个世界。语言真的是一项宝贵的财富。当我们与自己的朋友家人在自己的国家里，用我们熟悉的本国语言随心所欲地交流时，我们可能并没有认识到语言的重要性。但是，正是语言让我们可以互相交流，互相学习。这一点在南大-霍大中美中心得到了最好的证明。
当我美国的老师和朋友问我中心的生活怎么样时，他们不可避免地会问一个问题：“你的中文有进步吗？”我常常不知道该怎么回答这个问题，因为答案很复杂。在中心，国际学生的目标语言是汉语，尤其是普通话，中国学生的目标语言是英语，尤其是美式英语。但是，好像我们大多数人都没有能很好地实现这个目标。因为在中心，我们都在讲着同一种特殊的语言：中心语言。因此，我告诉我美国的老师，我不知道我的普通话有没有进步，但是我的中心语言非常流利。
来到中心的第一天，我们的世界里就同时夹杂着中文和英文。黄主任和杨主任给我们做报告，但他们完全不需要翻译！整个报告厅里都是至少能说两种语言的人。我们与室友谈话时，中文夹着英文，英文中有着中文。每一种语言都不会使用超过五分钟。午餐时激情洋溢的辩论，中心人乐在其中，外人可能就要花一段时间来听明白了。在不知不觉中，美国学生说英语的时候似乎也不能摆脱中文了。例如，When you 碰到 a really 麻烦 situation, it’s just… 麻烦。春假时，有同学的美国朋友来中心，但一开始他们完全听不明白中心美国同学间的谈话，因为这种谈话里已经有着深深地中心语言的烙印。
但这种双语的环境意义远远不在于它很好玩。来中心的客人往往惊诧于中心有多么特别。这就是中心特别的原因，在我们用多种语言交流的时候，我们开始真正理解对方。任何只说一种语言的人是难以想象我们在一起是如何交流的。正由于此，我们可以更深刻、更全面地去评价和思考他人的价值观。这并不是说我们的观点是一致的，恰恰相反，分歧永远存在。或者说，正是因为互相了解，我们才能发现更多的不同。但是互相理解和尊重是共同努力解决这些不同的关键，在分歧的基础上实现一致。或许如中国的那句古话所说“和而不同”。当我们在学习他国的政治经济文化法律的时候，我们永远不应该忘记，不管我们学了多少理论，背了多少公式，我们都要和彼此交流。不管我们认为自己是多么正确，我们应该去努力理解他人。而达到这个目标的最好方式就是说对方的语言。
我对中心的最初的了解就是中心希望将来美国的国务卿和中国的外交部长都是中心的校友。我敢打赌，他们将来见面的时候，一定在说着一种共同的语言：中心语言。
